Thanks to the generosity of many donors, the Veterans Memorial Wreath Foundation will place more than 3,000 wreaths at Veterans Memorial Park at Evergreen-Washelli Cemetery this Saturday, Dec. 18. With the large number of wreaths to honor veterans, VMWF needs significant help from the public to place the wreaths.
The ceremony takes place at 9 a.m. at 11220 Aurora Ave N in Seattle. The event is free, and refreshments will be provided immediately following.
At the organization’s last public wreath placing in 2019, some 1,253 wreaths were placed. The goal of Veterans Memorial Wreath Foundation is to place a wreath on each of the 5,000 veteran headstones at Washelli will have a wreath. The wreath-laying is part of the Wreaths Across America program, which places 1.7 million wreaths annually on veteran headstones at more than 2,500 locations in the U.S. and its territories. More than 1 million volunteers nationwide participate in wreath events.
“We also wish to give a very special thank you to Ashley Distribution,” said VMWF President Lorraine Zimmerman. “They hauled our wreaths from a distribution center in the Midwest to Washelli. We are grateful for their contribution to this special event, which makes this day possible.”
Zimmerman will read a proclamation from Governor Jay Inslee making Dec. 18, 2021, Wreaths Across America Day.
In addition to individual contributions, this year’s wreaths funded through the Veterans Memorial Wreath Foundation were sponsored by Network for Good, The National Society of Sons of the American Revolution, VFW Post #8870 in Edmonds and the Edmonds Daybreakers Foundation.
